Hoese, Gophers Run to 24-17 Win Over MTSU

Behind an improved running game paced by three touchdowns from senior fullback Jon Hoese, the Minnesota football team opened the 2010 season with a 24-17 win over Middle Tennessee State.

The Gophers immediately established the running game on Thursday with nine-straight plays on the ground to start the game. After an incomplete pass and a one-yard run from senior running back Duane Bennett, Hoese capped the 11-play, 79-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give Minnesota an early lead 6:17 into the first quarter. Athletics Hall of Fame Opens Sept. 10

For the first time, Golden Gopher fans will have one space dedicated to the history and tradition of Gopher Sports. On Friday, September 10, the T. Denny Sanford Athletics Hall of Fame at TCF Bank Stadium opens its doors public with a public open house from 6-8 p.m.

The open house will be preceded by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting with university president Robert Bruininks, athletics director Joel Maturi and T. Denny Sanford. Sanford’s gift, the largest personal gift to TCF Bank Stadium, made the Hall of Fame possible.

The Hall of Fame is located on the Southwest corner of TCF Bank Stadium between Goldy’s Locker Room and the Stadium Ticket Office. Fans can access the Hall of Fame through the John & Nancy Lindahl Premium Entrance (Benton County). Admission is free. [Read More]

Spotlight To Shine on QB Position Thursday

When Minnesota and Middle Tennessee State hit the field at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Thursday night, there will be plenty of attention paid to the quarterback position.

For Minnesota, three-time captain Adam Weber will be taking the opening snap of the season for the fourth straight year. He has taken virtually every meaningful snap for the past three seasons. But he fended off a challenge from sophomore MarQueis Gray in spring ball and the Gophers need to get the highly-regarded Gray on the field.

Weber’s head coach predicted big things for him this season at Tuesday afternoon’s press conference to preview the Middle Tennessee State game. [Read More]

Day one of the Minnesota Gophers’ Canadian Tour has reached the final hours. The squad reported to Williams Arena around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday to tend to packing. The Minnesota traveling party consists of the coaching staff (Tubby Smith, Ron Jirsa, Vince Taylor, Saul Smith), Athletic Trainer Roger Schipper, Director of Operations Joe Esposito, Special Assistant Steve Goodson, Video Coordinator Brian Bender Team Manager Ryan Wieland and 12 players.

The team arrived at Minneapolis International around 9:00 a.m. to check in. The staff at the airport made sure that our check-in was painless and around 11:30 we were en route. The Gophers landed around 2:30 p.m. local time and reached the team hotel (The Fairmont) around 3:00 p.m. [Read More]

Gopher Kick-Off Luncheon Set For August 25

The Goal Line Club will host its annual Golden Gopher Kick-Off Luncheon August 25 at the DQ Club Room inside TCF Bank Stadium.

The annual Kick-Off Luncheon provides St. Paul Chamber of Commerce members, Goal Line Club members, season ticket holders and other members of the community an opportunity to hear head coach Tim Brewster’s outlook on the 2010 season. It also gives attendees an opportunity to interact with Gopher coaches, players and staff.

Mbakwe Reinstated to Gopher Basketball Team

The Miami-Dade State’s Attorney’s Office announced today that Trevor Mbakwe has agreed to an offer to take part in a pre-trial intervention program and that the pending case against him will not proceed to trial.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office said that enrollment in the program “is not an admission of guilt nor is it a plea.” Mbakwe has maintained his innocence in the matter from the outset.

According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, all charges against Mbakwe will be dropped upon his successful completion of the program. [Read More]

Brewster: Competition Key Ingredient

During his media session today at the 2010 Big Ten Kickoff, head football coach Tim Brewster talked at length about the internal competition for playing time in the program on the eve of fall camp and just how important it is to the success of the program.

Now in his fourth year at Minnesota, Brewster said he was pleased with the strides the program has made in fostering competition through upgrades in talent and that he was looking forward to seeing those battles continue during fall camp.

“One common attribute that every football team in America has today is great competition,” Brewster said. “We feel like for the first time in my three years at the University of Minnesota, now going into our fourth year, that we’ve got great competition across the board. This spring (competition) made our team better. The competition that we had at quarterback, the competition that we had in the offensive line, and the great competition at tailback.” [Read More]
